What Are Gastric Balloons?
The Gastric balloon is a non-surgical, weight-loss option for over-weight patients. If you have a body mass index of 27 or more and have failed to lose weight using other methods, this might be an ideal solution for you.
The most common type of gastric balloon is the endoscopic balloon (Orbera, Lax Ball, Spatz). This is placed orally using an endoscope and is removed after 6-12 months using an endoscope. This method means there are no incisions or scars, and lasts up to 6 months. Studies have shown that patients lose up to 3x the amount of weight they would from exercise and diet alone.
How It Works
Dr. Samir uses the world’s leading intragastric balloon system, the FDA-approved Orbera, which is durable and made from soft silicone. The balloon is inflated in your stomach so it takes up space and encourages your body to adapt to smaller portion sizes. The procedure starts with mild sedation, then the deflated gastric balloon is inserted through the esophagus and into your stomach. The balloon is inflated until it is about the size of a grapefruit. The approximately 20-minute procedure is done in-office, and most patients go home after a two-hour recovery period.
After six months, the balloon is removed, again using an endoscope. Six Months post-removal, a psychologist and dietitian will support you on your weight-loss journey, to help you to maintain your new lifestyle habits.
